Behind the Design
We imagined a nature-based solution to protect Charleston's unique relationship with water.
On June 19, as the official federal comment period closed, four firms from Charleston and New York offered their response to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Charleston Peninsula Flood Protection Study. The “Imagine the Wall” concept builds on the foundation of engineering in that study, with structures built to the same height as the USACE proposal. However, instead of New Orleans-style T-walls and a concrete breakwater, their package merges engineered structures with natural features such as tidal marsh and oyster reefs.
“Sometimes it’s hard to know what you want until you see it. We are looking at solutions that offer an integrated approach to living with water”.
